Guidelines for Elderly Care
About Lesson

Engaging with the elderly population requires a considered approach that acknowledges their pace and experience. Societal trends often demonstrate a bias towards youth, which can manifest as ageism or age discrimination. This can lead to a lack of patience and respect towards older adults, viewing them as out of step with the rest of society’s rapid pace.

When providing care for older adults, it’s essential to adopt the right perspective and attitude. The following principles should guide interactions with the elderly:

  • Capability and Learning: Recognize that older adults are capable of achieving and learning new things. They derive a sense of well-being from being able to perform tasks independently.

  • Value Experience and Wisdom: Appreciate the vast experience and wisdom that older adults bring. While they may not be familiar with all modern advancements, their life knowledge is extensive.

  • Respectful Interaction: It’s crucial to interact with older adults with the respect due to any adult. They should not be patronized or treated as children.

  • Personal Interests and Autonomy: Acknowledge that older adults have their own set of interests, preferences, and aversions. They should be afforded the dignity of making their own choices.
